Amshinover Rebbe Says Kiddush Levana During The Day

You always hear the stories about how the Amshinover Rebbe is not restricted by our normal time frames and does things at different times than most of us. I always thought the stories of the Amshinover Rebbe keeping Shabbos until Tuesday, and similar stories such as davening shacharis in the middle of the night, etc. were exagerrated to make a point. Maybe they were also slightly in jest.

Sure enough, here are pictures of the Amshinover Rebbe saying kiddush levana during the day, instead of at night as it is usually said by most of us. Those stories are clearly true..

More images (though they are all pretty similar, can be seen on Bechadrei...

  2. I witnessed them blow shofar at night. they blew the next day after it was over for everyone else. they regularly held shachris minyanim in tyhe afternoon, running by the yeshiva looking for people to make minyanim,

  3. But did he at least say it while seeing the moon in the sky?

  4. Hey, according to Avi Shafran, the Amshinover Rebbe isn't Orthodox!

    http://www.cross-currents.com/archives/2011/08/23/the-o-word-2/

... proposes to reject an element—any element—of the Jewish mandate, there can be no question about his having relinquished the right to call himself Orthodox.

  6. what element of the Jewish mandate is he rejecting?

The mandate of kiddush levana at night.

The mandate of ending shabbos sometime on Saturday night.

    The mandate of tefillah b'zman.

    etc.

  7. I dont think he rejects the elements of Judaism. i think he just sees himself operating in a different time frame. I dont think he tells others to not do what the SA says but to do what he does..

  8. I dont think he rejects the elements of Judaism.

The Rabbi that opposes Shelo Asani Isha also isn't rejecting elements of Judaism.

  9. amshinover Rebbe makes it a point to have at least one rishon permitting to do whatever he does.

  11. mark, I wasn't talking about Hashkafa topics, only about halachic topics. (i guess the only hashakfa amshinover rebbe has is that single views in halacha are valid...)

  12. if you look at tsheuvot from JTS or the masoriti movement, they always quote rishonim

  13. Ben, quoting Rishonim isn't enough. The rishonim have to explicitly permit whatever it is you seek to permit.

  14. If I am not mistaken, Rav Shlomo Zalman, among others, have said in the past that the Amshinover rebbe is an exception, and while others should not do what he does, he does it for very holy reasons we do not understand and he should not be bothered for what he does.

I am not sure when we allow such exceptions and when not, but the rabbonim said it specifically regarding the Amshnover.

First of, the reason why the Amshinover Rebbe ends Shabbos the latest of Halochically permitted times is probably, as was done by the Baal Shem Tov, because the fires of gehinam (hell) do not start until Shabbos is completley over around the globe
It is a tremendous chutspah to put Amshinover Rebbe on trial. If Reb Shlomo Zalman anounced many times publicly that you will never find the Amshinover doing an avarah (sin) because one sin leads to another (avarah goreres avarah) AND THERE IS NO OTHER AVAERAH, hence there was no avarah.
Secondly, be intelligent, if you don't know something about an issue, first learn about it and then make an educated decision - This man is a real old world Tzaddick and he dedicated his life to helping others 23 hours a day. His Shmona Esra for Shachris is 6 to 7 hours
Need I continue. there are not many Jews in the world who love other Jews the way that he does , if any at all. So when you're on that level please go ahead and judge but first make an educated decision by knowing about the person you're talking about, publicaly,- it could save you a lot of problems after 120
