Channel 10's Dark Day For Democracy

The Knesset Economic Committee today rejected the request by Channel 10 to extend the due date on their outstanding loans by an additional year.

Channel 10 is meant to repay its loans of 60 million NIS by the end of 2011. They say they are not able to make the payment, and asked for a year extension. Without the extension, they say they will be forced to shut down.

Some are calling it a black day, a political move by the government, vindictive, bad day for democracy, etc.

Channel 10 is a private company. I have no problem with them asking to be bailed out, or to postpone their debt repayment obligation. One can always ask. Many other companies have renegotiated debt repayment terms in the past. Even if Channel 10 would have to close because of this, as they say they will have to, I don't consider it a dark day. Channel 10 is a private company. They need to have a business model, and if they cannot make it with their model, it is nobody else's obligation or fault. I feel bad for everybody who loses their investment or a job, but I would not call it a dark day for democracy. Business, unfortunately, close all the time.

  1. Why is everything here always "a dark day for democracy"?

  2. the dark day was channel 10 itself when it did things like promoting the idea of "protecting sharon like an etrog" or their total support for the summer's protest movement. please note i am not taking a position against the pinui or against the protest. however, it was/is not channel 10's job to act as a propaganda faucet.

  3. as one of the MKs said (I dont remember which offhand) that if they cant function without Knesset assistance, they are no longer a watchdog but are more like the Knesset's poodle. or something like that.
