Quote of the Day

The Mashiach will see what is happening here in this committee and he will not come! this committee has become the garbage dump of Judaism. All the laws that are anti-religious come to you... You were always anti-religious! You are a great hero. You talk the talk, so you cannot be a member of the committee for appointing judges, as there only strong people are needed. You are competing with Minister Bennet for who can be more liberal..

-- MK Moshe Gafni (UTJ), to MK Dovid Rotem (Likud Beyteynu) during the committee discussion about the law proposal allowing a couple registering for marriage to do so in whichever of the religious councils around the country that they should desire to register in, and that women would be included in the committee to select dayanim..

1. I still don't understand why this is so bad. I would personally think that it should be demanded of the Rabbanut to enforce equal rules, at least with some sort of equal minimum approved by the Chief Rabbis and/or Religious Councils, being enforced in all their offices around the country. That may already be happening, or it may not - I personally assumed it was, but I am open to hearing that that is not the case.  And as long as each Rabbanut office is keeping an acceptable minimal level, why is it so bad for couple to be able to register in whichever office they want?
Why is that liberal, anti-religious or something that might prevent mashiach's arrival?

2. I also do not get why it is so bad, and anti-religious, to have women on the committee for choosing dayanim. The dayanim wont have to answer to the women once they are selected... As well, once non-rabbis and non-dayanim are choosing the dayanim, what's the difference if it is male or female politicians? Neither of them should be involved in the process. It is at least no less than the judges choosing the Supreme Court Justices, rather than it being done by a committee of politicians. So, neither the men nor the women should be choosing the dayanim, but once the non-rabbinic men are, I don't see why it is any worse that non-rabbinic women are as well.

3. Before MK Rotem came along, when the law had not yet been changed, when the law was not yet anti-religious (as per MK Gafni's opinion), Mashiach had still not come. Clearly, this is not the issue that is holding Mashiach back...

  1. One egregious example is not allowed ANY weddings during all 50 days of Sfirah. Even for Chilonim, or for Sfardim, etc
This was enforced in 90% of Rabbanut offices, but at least in Maaleh Adumim it was not

  2. Perhaps Gafni and his elitist, holier than thou attitude is the real reason that we have not merited geulah.
