Haredi woman joins Habayit Hayehudi party list in Jerusalem
Stranger things have happened, but often enough elections brings out the strange..
The Jerusalem Habayit Hayehudi party finalized the party list for the upcoming elections and the candidate filling the third slot on the list is a Haredi woman from Mea Shearim!
Racheli Ibenboim is 28 years old and is the director of the Meir Panim charitable organization.
Ibenboim is behind the project of giving a "credit card" to the needy via which they can purchase food (and only food - no alcohol or cigarettes) in different stores around town. The card is distributed via social workers... Ibenboim is also active in the advancement of Haredi women in the job market.
Unfortunately, Ibenboim only had one thing to say, according to the quote in Srugim. And that is that she has been serving the public for so many years that she is excited to be able to serve the public via the city council of Jerusalem.
I would have liked to hear how she decided, as a Haredi woman from Mea Shearim, decided to run for city council, and why she is doing so as part of Habayit Hayehudi which has become portrayed as antagonistic to the Haredi community at best.
My thought is that it is just not possible to do so on a Haredi ticket, as the haredi parties continue to refuse to allow women on.. so the women are looking for alternatives. Women want to serve the public, they want to advance and succeed just like anyone else, and no longer will they accept that they are not allowed to just because they are female. That's what is happening in Tzfat, Petach Tikva, Tiberias and other places, and now Jerusalem. it only answers my question in part, though. I still wonder how it happened with Habayit Hayehudi which is being considered as hostile to haredim..

Why do you claim that BY is 'portrayed' as being anti-Haredi? It's an image they've created for themselves by attacking the Haredim, way of life and yeshivot.
ReplyDeleteCurious about the new candidate but will she listen to the gedolim? I ask because I heard an interview last week about a Haredi running under the Likud banner, and the host kept asking over and over what the candidate would do if Rav Steinman would ask him to step down. The candidate was doing a good job at diplomatically dodging the intrusive, speculative and personal question, but the announcer was being really, really annoying about demanding an answer. Sheesh.

DeleteShe should have said, I don't know Rav Shteinman. He is not my personal rav to whom I ask questions. He does not know me or anything about me and could never give me advice or render a psak without even meeting me.
ReplyDeleteIF the gadol asked to meet with me AND we had a long meeting during which time I was able to explain my life, AND he met with Yair Lapid and party members and we talked about everything, AND he then advised me to step down, with no outside influences, then I would certainly consider it!!! However, IF someone just pressures this elderly tzaddik into saying, Some woman I don't know should step down, then I would not.
That covers it all, since Rav S will never sit with her and Lapid.

Deletecan you imagine how an interview with her would have gone on kol berama? i don't know what they would have found to be more offensive that she is a woman or that she joined bayit yehudi.
DeleteA woman with a modern hashkafa who wants to pretend to be charedi is a perfect fit for BY. It allows a divide and conquer. And for a secular party, gender politcs are part of the sell.
