Eichler works to protect Haredi stone throwers
When confronted, Haredi leaders deny giving any protection or support to Haredi extremists. They will say extremists who attack others should be arrested and they encourage the police to do so. They will say that the extremists are not connected to them and do not listen to them. They will deny any connection, and even take offense at being thought of as being connected and similar and for bearing any semblance of responsibility for their actions.
And then this happens...
Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked has made a move to come down harsher on stone throwers. Shaked revived an old law proposal, originally proposed by Tzippi Livni, by which a stone thrower can be convicted for his actions with a the full harsh sentence allowed without requiring an impossible level of burden of proof.
MK Yisroel Eichler (UTJ) is the person who opposes this law. And he opposes it because he is concerned that it would be used to put Haredi stone-throwers in jail.
Eichler has in the past stood up for the extremists, working to get violent extremists out of jail, and he does so again. Eichler says this law is too vague, and in truth there is a difference between Haredi stone throwers who have no intent to kill or maim and are only expressing their pain and sorrow about Land issues (for example) and betwene people looking to destroy the State.
So once again a mainstream Haredi leader is out defending and protecting the people the Haredi leaders claim to have no connection to and no interest in protecting.

Well on the other hand he makes a valid point. After all, someone throwing stones at a car on Shabbos is totally different than someone throwing a stone at a woman because her dress displeases him.

You'd be hard pressed to find 100, yet alone tens of thousands. Your exagerations are lashon hara against an entire group of Jews.

Deleteyou have to be kidding. you never saw 100 people actually throwing rocks. maybe standing around while a few threw but never did you see a hundred people throwing rocks.
DeleteI have seen, by my estimate, a group larger than 100 shouting and protesting; while tens of them threw rocks and no one protested. Even supported them. You should have seen Rehov Bar Ilan at Kvish Ramot in its heyday, when Kvish Ramot was fairly new.
DeleteThe fact that tens of Jews of all ages can throw rocks, on Shabbat no less!, within a larger group (on more than one Shabbat) with no one stopping them is an indictment of the group.

DeleteI never voted for HIM - I voted for UTJ, which unfortunately helped him get into the Knesset as well.
DeleteThe subjective "intent" of the stone-thrower is not what causes the objective physical injury and psychological trauma to the human target. Stone-throwing remains assault with a potentially lethal weapon and must be taken seriously and punished harshly under the law, no matter who does it.
ReplyDeleteThis is where the Haredim are doomed. The extremists are quietly overrunning the moderate majority. Eichler and unfortunately other Haredi leaders, are too often guilty of kneejerk defending of Haredim. Another idiotic issue was how so many came to kneejerk defend the guy who was putting on or wearing tefillin or wearing a Talit over his head while driving. Sometimes, Haredi leaders should know when to criticize themselves but we know that is too hard to do outside some hespedim when bad things happen.
ReplyDeleteI thought MK Eichler is a frum guy? So what, the values of halachah aren't good for him? Adam l'olam muad - a competent adult is always responsible for his actions. As Chana said above, a stone is a dangerous weapon. So if someone wants to throw stones, whether an Arab terrorist or a Haredi terrorist; he must be punished accordingly. In halacha, an adult always has to bear responsibility for his volitional acts. How hard is that to understand?
