Proposed Law: scales for consumers

MK Yaakov Asher (UTJ) has proposed a law that will require large stores and branches of chains to install scales near any items sold loose by weight, for the use of shoppers so they can have an idea of how much they are buying and what it will cost.

Asher quoted the verses in the Torah about honest scales and said we are obligated to give the consumer the tools to shop wisely and have the information necessary to decide whether to purchase something or not and to know how much he will pay.

The law proposal passed its initial voting in the Ministerial Legislative Committee and in the Knesset and will not be prepared for final voting to pass it into law.

good law, in my opinion

  1. I don't know if it is a good law or not. But scales in the veggie section is one of the very few things I miss about America.

  2. Some stores put the weight and final price on a label for everything sold by weight (usually only for meat...never seen that for produce). I think that's a better idea.

    1. Osher Ad does that for spices and other loose items they sell at the spice kiosk (nuts, mostly). It doesn't work for items you select and bag yourself. For produce, the receipt will have that information.
