Proposed Law: opening city council meetings to the public

MK Dudi Amsalem (Likud) has proposed a law that would require municipalities to open their city council meetings to the public.

They would have to live stream the meeting on the Internet and make it available to the general public via the municipal website or another external website linked from it. The Iryah would have to publicize the video of the meetings and post the transcript of the meeting within two weeks of the meeting having taken place.

Additionally, the Iryah would be required to open the doors of the city council meetings to the public. Currently they only have to make the meeting visible to the public, such as via a screen hookup in another room.

This proposal was pushed by the "social watch" organization in order to increase transparency and public awareness of what is happening.

Opening the doors to the public seems to me to be opening the door to potential havoc and chaos. I am sure the public would not be allowed to speak, but on heated issues it might be difficult to control people. As well, on issues that the public is very interested in, spectators might flood the meeting and make it very crowded and uncomfortable. Personally I think the requirement for live streaming the meeting should be enough.
