Degel and Aguda fighting about positions again

I don't know who deserves the position based on the internal agreements between Agudas Yisrael and Degel Hatorah, but another internal fight is brewing.

Yisrael Eichler is resigning from his committee chair to take the position of Deputy Knesset Chairman. Degel is angry saying they deserve the position for Yaakov Asher, and Aguda takes all the top positions based on the old agreement and it should be revisited.

Asher's people have said that he has no need for the position, but it is an issue of principles - Degel deserves the position.

The irony here, and I always love me some good irony, is that Yaakov Asher is only a Member of Knesset thanks to Menachem Porush resigning from his Knesset seat under the Norwegian Law, to allow Asher in. He should just say thank you and move on. If Degel makes too much trouble here, Porush can just take his seat back and send Asher back to Bnei Braq.

In general, this is like buyers remorse. They made an agreement decades ago for division of power. Now they think the balance has changed, each claiming to be deserving of more. The only real way to figure it out is to cancel the agreement and for each party to go its own way. Another  option is to hold primaries of some sort, but I don't see that solving the issue and whoever comes out behind will just make more trouble and insist the orginal agreement be honored.

  1. wait - can't they just ask the Gedolim, I thought that the MKs from Aguda and Degel were just mouthpieces for "Daas Torah", so it wouldn't make any difference who sits in the knesset, provided that they have the correct phone numbers and vote and speak as they are told.

Sort of like an ambassador who represents his government and isn't supposed to have any independent thoughts.

    1. the problem is that aguda (chassidish) and degel (litvish) are led by different gedolim with different opinions. therefore this can't be settled by "ask the gedolim". in any case, while policy is clearly set by the torah leadership, personal issues like job satisfaction/prestige are not.
