death penalty law not being automatically supported

UTJ is getting a little heat for not automatically supporting the bill proposed by Yisrael Beyteynu to give the death penalty to terrorists.

UTJ has said a couple of things about this.

First, they are upset at Yisrael Beyteynu for not supporting the minimarket bill and are therefore inclined to not support this bill of Yisrael Beyteynu in return.
Second, this bill would be a dangerous precedent and therefore has to be considered before jumping in.
Third, they will raise it in a discussion of the various MKs.
Fourth, it needs to be presented to the rabbonim for a decision.

I think that is perfectly legitimate.

Yisrael Beyeteynu did not support UTJ's desired law, so they don't have to support this. Coalitions are made up of various parties, each with its own issues dear to them that sometimes are not held of in the same esteem by other members of the coalition. The way the coalition works is I support your issues and you support mine. If I dont support yours, I cannot expect you to support mine.

This is a serious issue and needs to be considered carefully. And it needs to be presented to the rabbonim, as is the policy of UTJ, at least on serious issues. That being said, it is no surprise that the law is ready to be voted on, and they could have already had the various necessary discussions and have already presented it to the gedolim for a decision. Doing this at the last minute is typical, though it is possible they have already had discussions about the proposal and are now just holding it up because of the minimarket law issue. Form the other perspective, Yisrael Beyteynu knew this was coming up and obviously weighed carefully the lack of support to the minimarket law knowing it would come back to hurt them now - so it was taken into account.

Either way, it is legitimate to consider this one carefully, and even to oppose it in response to the lack of support by Yisrael Beyteynu for the minimarket law.
